A Foodies Guide to Andaman: Seafood You Cannot Miss

Beaches and scuba diving might be why you come to the Andamans, but for food lovers, the islands present another equally tantalizing draw: incredibly fresh, Ocean-bounty-level seafood, landed fresh from the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

It ranges from humble beach shacks in Havelock to basic Port Blair neighborhood canteens, your Andaman seafood repast is a delicious fusion born of decades of settlers from across the mainland - Bengalis, South Indians, Southeast Asians among them.

This guide walks through the dishes, seafood varieties, and places worth eating across your Andaman tour package, so food is as much a highlight of your trip as the islands themselves.

    Why Andaman's Seafood Tastes Different

Andaman's seafood uniqueness is its fresh, locale-driven approach. Fish and shellfish are mostly same-day catch, the surrounding seas have a much lower degree of industrial fishing compared with mainland India and as a result one can find a diverse catch, from colourful reef- fish to much less common deep-sea creatures seldom featured on mainstream Indian menus.

What helps is that the cuisine combines all of this with cooking traditions transplanted by Bengal, Tamil, Telugu and Karen communities - meaning the food in Andaman has an Indian flavour, without being remotely the same.

Andaman seafood dishes you should try

    • Grilled and Tandoori Fish - Whole, freshly-caught red snapper or tuna that's usually marinated in local spices and grilled over embers or tandoor-style comes from a grill at a beachside shack on Havelock Island or in Port Blair.

    • Andaman lobster - Given that it has to be served fresh, fresh catch lobsters, usually grilled with butter and garlic, or cooked into an Indian version of a spicy coconut curry are a splurge here that is truly worth it.

    • Crab Masala - If there is one special non-vegetarian dish from Andaman you need to try, this would be it. Mudcrab and blue-crab curries come cooked in a hot, flavourful masala, the best being those you’ll see simmering in many small establishments on the islands.

    • Prawn curry with rice - On this visit I ate several versions, but I fell in love with the Bengali style of the coconut and spiced broth in which the plump prawns swam at a modest eat-out in the main town of Port Blair.

    • Squid and calamari - Often served fried or in a light, local masala this is an inexpensive and tasty alternative to lobster or crab.

Eating in Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Islands

Port Blair will offer the most choice. Seafood specialists are plentiful, along with food stalls in local markets where you can buy your own selection of fish and have it grilled to order – a wonderfully hands-on way to get your fill of the freshest local fish.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep), , Andaman's most popular tourist hub, is home to a cluster of beachside shacks and cafes near Radhanagar Beach, many specializing in grilled seafood served with a sea view - a natural stop on most Havelock Island packages.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) presents a more low-key and quiet dining choice, and is dotted with smaller, family-run establishments which typically also cook up fresh fish along with standard South Indian fare, in line with its more relaxed, less commercially developed, vibe.

    Vegetarian / Non- Seafood Options

Although seafood may be king for many here, the Andaman food scene accommodates reasonably well for the vegetarian traveler, particularly with the large South Indian population living throughout the islands. Simple thalis, dosas and coconut-based vegetable curries can be easily found in Port Blair as well as many of the islands, meaning this is not too challenging a destination for families traveling with people on different eating requirements.

Tips for Eating Well in Andaman

    • Apart from restaurants geared towards tourists, also find out from your resort / homestay, their local favourite eateries for true Andaman flavours.

    • When ordering seafood, do ask what's fresh for the day, and go with the flow instead of ordering a particular dish. Staff members will usually know what's been freshly caught for the day.

    • Lobster and crab prices can fluctuate a lot throughout the year and in season, make it a point to double-check the prices at new places.

    • Note the timings at smaller places especially family run eateries at Neil Island and parts of Havelock - many of them close kitchen much earlier than anywhere in the mainland.

Andaman - Best time to Visit for Fresh Seafood

Fresh seafood is readily available throughout the year, but the major tourist season of October to May is considered the best month for travelling to the Andamans since there are calm seas and fishing happens to a certain extent then. During the monsoons (June to September), seafood availability may also be inconsistent at many smaller restaurants as is the case on the other side of the country as well.

How Bayard Vacations Builds Food Experiences Into Your Andaman Trip

Our Andaman tour packages are designed to give travelers real access to the islands' food culture, not just resort dining:

    • Stays near Havelock's beach shack clusters for easy access to fresh grilled seafood.

    • Local eatery recommendations in Port Blair, curated by our on-ground travel partners.

    • Flexible dining schedules that don't lock you into resort-only meals.

    • Options to combine Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island so you experience each island's distinct food scene.
