    About Sri Lanka

A teardrop island of misty mountains, ancient temples, pristine beaches, and warm hearts—where every moment blends spiritual serenity with tropical adventure.

Sri Lanka's history spans over 3,000 years of documented civilization, marked by the rise and fall of ancient Buddhist kingdoms, the arrival of the sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, colonial domination, and eventual independence, making it a key focus in any Sri Lanka history search. Sri Lankan independence Known as 'Serendib' by ancient traders and 'Ceylon' during colonial times, this island nation has preserved a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian traditions while maintaining cultural continuity unmatched in South Asia.

    Why Choose Sri Lanka?

The Sacred Tooth Relic: Buddhism's Holiest Treasure

The Tooth Relic of Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century CE, is enshrined in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy.[web:625] This relic transformed Sri Lanka into a spiritual epicenter, attracting Buddhist pilgrims worldwide. The annual Kandy Esala Perahera—a midnight procession featuring 100 elephants, 5,000 drummers, and thousands of dancers—has remained largely unchanged for over 1,500 years, making it one of the world's most spectacular religious festivals.[web:625]

    Sigiriya: The 5th-Century Sky Fortress

Rising 200 meters above the jungle, Sigiriya Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 5th century as a royal palace and fortress.[web:622][web:625] The site's engineering marvels include intricate water gardens, mirror walls with mirror-polished surfaces, and ancient frescoes depicting celestial maidens. It represents pre-modern Asia's most sophisticated urban planning and remains one of tourism's most iconic destinations.[web:622]

Theravada Buddhism: The Oldest Living Tradition

Sri Lanka preserved Theravada Buddhism in its purest form for over 2,300 years, making it the oldest continuously-practicing Buddhist nation.[web:618][web:627] Unlike Mahayana Buddhism in East Asia, Theravada emphasizes monastic ordination and textual study. The Pali Canon—Buddhism's earliest scriptures—were first written down in Sri Lanka at Aluvihare in the 1st century CE.[web:624]

Tea Legacy: From Colonial Plantations to Global Icon

In 1867, British planters transformed Sri Lanka into the world's premier tea-growing nation.[web:655] 'Ceylon Tea,' cultivated in misty hill country, became globally synonymous with quality. Today, Sri Lanka produces 340,000+ tons annually, employing millions and defining the nation's economy and landscape.[web:655]

    Must-Experience Attractions

Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage)
Kandy & Temple of the Tooth Relic
Nuwara Eliya & Tea Plantations (Little England)
Scenic Kandy–Ella Train & Nine Arches Bridge
South Coast Beaches – Bentota, Mirissa, Unawatuna

Sri Lanka Tour Packages from India

A Sri Lanka package from India costs roughly ₹28,500 to ₹89,500 per person, and it is the easiest international trip most Indian travellers will ever take. The visa is free — Indian passport holders pay nothing for a 30-day tourist ETA and Chennai to Colombo is about eighty minutes in the air, with direct flights from six Indian cities.

Most Bayard travellers choose a 3 night Kandy and Bentota taster, a 5 night hills and coast loop, or a 6 to 8 night route adding Sigiriya, Ella or a wildlife park. Below, we explain exactly what the free visa involves, which flight from your city makes sense, how to split your days between hills, coast and wildlife, and which national park will actually be open when you travel.

Direct to Colombo from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Mumbai and Delhi. Chennai–Colombo is about 1 hour 20 minutes. Jaffna is served direct from Chennai and Tiruchirappalli

    Getting around

Private car or coach throughout — no internal flights needed. Distances are short but roads are winding, so plan drive times rather than map distances

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka in 2026?

You need a tourist ETA, and for Indian passport holders it is completely free. No fee, no embassy appointment, no visa sticker, no agent required. India has had fee-free access since the 2023 pilot scheme, and the arrangement was extended to 40 countries with effect from 25 May 2026.

    What you get

    • 30 days, for tourism, family visits and short business meetings.

    • Double entry — you can leave Sri Lanka and return once within the 30-day window without reapplying. Useful if you are combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives.

    • Extensions are possible in Colombo for a fee if you want to stay longer. Overstaying is treated seriously, so extend before your 30 days end rather than after.

    How to apply

Go to eta.gov.lk, the official Department of Immigration portal, choose Tourist ETA, and enter your passport details, travel dates and accommodation address. Approval usually comes back by email within hours. Use only the official site — third-party sites charge for something the government provides free.

One point of confusion, cleared up

You may have read that Indians now need nothing at all beyond a passport and ticket. Sri Lanka's High Commission in India said as much in early 2026, while the immigration department's own portal still describes a free ETA application, and a briefly-introduced mandatory pre-departure rule was reversed in late 2025. Our advice, which is correct whichever version applies on your travel date: fill in the free online form anyway. It costs nothing, takes a few minutes, and means you walk past the visa-on-arrival queue at Colombo rather than standing in it.

    What else to carry:

A passport valid at least six months beyond arrival, a confirmed return or onward ticket, your accommodation details, and evidence of funds if asked.

Entry rules were correct at the time of writing and have changed more than once recently recheck at immigration.gov.lk immediately before booking, and see the review cadence in Step 4.

Sri Lanka package cost from India

Bayard's Sri Lanka packages run from ₹28,500 per person for a three-night Kandy and Bentota trip to ₹89,500 per person for a fuller hills, Ella and coast itinerary. Because the visa is free and no internal flights are needed, more of what you pay goes into the holiday itself than on almost any other international destination we sell.

    What actually changes the price

    • Hotel category, which is the largest single variable and the reason two trips of the same length can differ substantially.

    • Meal plan. Half-board matters more in Sri Lanka than in most places, because several hill and beach hotels sit away from walkable dining, so breakfast-only can mean paying hotel restaurant rates for dinner anyway.

    • Private car with driver versus a shared coach. Private costs more and is worth it for families, elders and anyone wanting to stop when they like.

    • Whether a national park safari is included. Park entry is charged per person and per vehicle and is a real line item, not a rounding error.

    • Whether international flights are bundled.

And what does not: there is no tourist tax, no departure levy for short-stay visitors and no visa fee. What you are quoted is close to what you pay.

How to split your days: hills, coast and wildlife

Sri Lanka is small on the map and slow on the road. Distances look short and drive times do not match them, so the real planning question is how many bases you take, not how many places you can name.

    • 3 nights: Kandy and Bentota, with Colombo either side. One hill stop, one beach stop, minimal driving. Right for a first visit, a long weekend, or travelling with young children.

    • 5 to 6 nights: the classic circuit — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya for the tea country, then down to Bentota or the south coast. This is the itinerary most people picture when they think of Sri Lanka, and it is comfortable at this length.

    • 7 to 9 nights: add Sigiriya and Dambulla for the cultural triangle, Ella for the hill scenery and the train, Galle for the fort, or a wildlife park. Do not try to add all four.

    • Our rule of thumb: no more than one long drive per day, and at least two nights anywhere you actually want to enjoy. Nuwara Eliya in particular sits at altitude up a winding road — it rewards a two-night stay and punishes a rushed overnight, especially for elders.

    Choose your Sri Lanka itinerary

    Kandy & Bentota — 4 Days / 3 Nights

Best for a first visit and short breaks

    • Day 1: Arrive Colombo, drive to Kandy; elephant experience en route (see our note below on choosing between Pinnawala and Udawalawe); evening at Kandy Lake.

    • Day 2: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy city and viewpoints, cultural show in the evening.

    • Day 3: Drive to Bentota; Madu River boat safari and turtle hatchery, then beach time.

    • Day 4: Colombo — Galle Face Green, Independence Square, shopping — and departure.

    Customize this itinerary →

    Classic Sri Lanka — 6 Days / 5 Nights

Best for first-timers who want hills, tea country and coast

    • Day 1: Arrive Colombo, drive to Kandy.

    • Day 2: Kandy sightseeing and the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

    • Day 3: Up to Nuwara Eliya through tea estates and Ramboda Falls; factory visit and Gregory Lake.

    • Day 4: Down to Bentota or the south coast; evening by the sea.

    • Day 5: Madu River safari, beach time, optional water sports.

    • Day 6: Colombo city and departure.

    Cultural Triangle & Hills — 7 Days / 6 Nights

Best for travellers who want Sigiriya as well as the standard circuit

Adds Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Cave Temple to the classic route, usually as the first two nights before Kandy. Sigiriya is an early-morning climb of around 1,200 steps — worth knowing in advance if anyone in your group would find that difficult, in which case Pidurangala offers the view without the climb count.

    Ella, Galle & Wildlife — 8 to 10 Days

Best for a fuller trip with train scenery, the south coast and a safari

The longest routes add Ella for the hill scenery and the Nine Arches Bridge, Galle for the Dutch fort, and a national park. If the Kandy–Ella train is a priority, tell us early — reserved seats open a limited window ahead and sell out fast, and we book them as soon as they release rather than hoping on the day.

Build a longer Sri Lanka trip →

Ramayana Trail Sri Lanka — 6 to 7 Days

Best for family yatras, temple groups and elders

A dedicated circuit rather than a variation on the beach itinerary: Seetha Amman Temple near Nuwara Eliya, Hanuman temples, the Temple of the Tooth Relic at Kandy, and on longer routes extensions towards Dambulla, Trincomalee and Koneswaram. We pace these itineraries for older travellers — shorter driving days, hotels chosen for accessibility rather than views, and vegetarian meals arranged throughout rather than requested on arrival.

Getting to Sri Lanka from your city

Sri Lanka is the best-connected international destination we sell from South India. IndiGo alone operates more than fifty-five flights a week into Colombo from five Indian cities, and SriLankan Airlines serves around ten. Chennai to Colombo takes about eighty minutes — shorter than a domestic flight to Delhi.

A gateway most people do not know about

Almost every Sri Lanka package flies into Colombo, but Jaffna in the north has direct flights from Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. For travellers focused on the north and east, or on cultural and pilgrimage routes, flying into one gateway and out of the other can remove a long backtrack. Ask us to price it.

Inside Sri Lanka, everything is by road — private car with driver on most of our packages. No internal flights are needed, which is a large part of why Sri Lanka costs less than comparable island destinations.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island at different times of year, which means there is almost always somewhere with good weather — and it also means a single "best time" answer is misleading.

    Months

    What it's like

    Verdict

    December–March

Drier and sunnier on the west and south coasts and through the central hills — the region every standard itinerary covers

Best for the classic Colombo–Kandy–Nuwara Eliya–Bentota circuit. Also the busiest and priciest

    April and September–October

Transitional and unpredictable, with a mix of sun and heavy showers

Good value and quieter, but plan around weather rather than assuming it

    May–September

South-west monsoon affects the west and south coasts, including Bentota and Galle

Better suited to the east coast — Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are at their best now

    October–January

North-east monsoon affects the north and east

Standard west-and-south itineraries work well; avoid Trincomalee

The practical version: if you are doing the standard circuit, aim for December to March. If your dates are fixed in mid-year, we will point you at the east coast rather than telling you the whole country is wet.

Wildlife: which park, and what is actually open

This is the part of a Sri Lanka trip where the wrong default costs you the most, so it is worth a moment.

    • Yala has the highest leopard density of any park in the world and is the most famous. It is also the busiest, with heavy jeep traffic at peak times, and its main sections close periodically. Blocks 1 and 2 are closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought; Blocks 3 to 6 stay open via the Galge entrance.

    • Udawalawe is the reliable elephant park — sightings are close to guaranteed year-round, the terrain is open, and it is considerably quieter than Yala. For most travellers, and especially families, this is the better first safari.

    • Wilpattu is the largest and least visited, with dense forest and natural lakes. Leopard sightings are less frequent than Yala but the experience is wilder and far less crowded.

    • Bundala and Kumana are the bird parks, and both work well as alternatives when Yala's main blocks are shut.

We check park status against the Department of Wildlife Conservation before confirming any safari, and we will tell you if the section you are picturing is closed on your dates rather than quietly substituting another. Current Yala status is published at yalasrilanka.lk.

    Elephants: Pinnawala or Udawalawe?

Pinnawala appears on most Sri Lanka itineraries, including many of ours, and it is worth knowing what it is. It was founded in 1975 to care for orphaned calves, but since 1995 genuinely orphaned elephants have gone instead to the Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe, and Pinnawala's herd has grown mostly through births in captivity. The feeding and river-bathing sessions that draw the crowds have been criticised on welfare grounds; supporters point out that the facility funds real veterinary care and is better run than most elephant camps in the region.

The Elephant Transit Home takes the opposite approach: orphaned calves are raised for release back into the wild, visitors watch feeding from a distance, and there is no interaction. It is less of a spectacle and, for many travellers, a better experience.

Both are legitimate choices and we will arrange either. What we will not do is put one in your itinerary without telling you what it is. Say which you would prefer and we will build around it.

Top places to include in your Sri Lanka package

    Kandy

The cultural capital, in the hills and noticeably cooler than the coast. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the country's most important Buddhist site; the lake, the markets and the evening cultural show fill a comfortable day and a half. Best for: culture, temples and a gentler climate.

Nuwara Eliya and the tea country

Colonial bungalows, cool air and tea estates running up every hillside. Factory visits, Gregory Lake and Ramboda Falls are the standard stops. The drive up is winding and takes longer than the distance suggests — plan two nights if you can. Best for: scenery, cooler weather, and anyone who likes tea.

    Ella and the Kandy–Ella train

The train from Kandy through the hill country to Ella is one of the world's great rail journeys, and Ella itself gives you the Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and a relaxed hill-town feel. The important practical point: reserved seats release a limited window in advance and sell out quickly. If this matters to you, tell us at the time of booking rather than closer to travel. Best for: photographers, couples and anyone who has seen the pictures.

    Sigiriya and the cultural triangle

The fifth-century rock fortress with its water gardens, mirror wall and frescoes, plus the Dambulla Cave Temple nearby. Sigiriya is a climb of around 1,200 steps, best done early before the heat; Pidurangala rock opposite gives you the classic view of Sigiriya itself with a shorter scramble. Best for: history, heritage and early risers.

    Bentota and the south coast

Bentota is the standard beach base calm water, the Madu River boat safari through mangroves, a turtle hatchery and water sports. Further south, Galle's Dutch fort, Unawatuna and Mirissa are worth the extra driving on longer itineraries. Best for: families, honeymooners and anyone who wants the trip to end lying down.

    Colombo

The entry and exit city, and best treated as a half-day rather than a destination: Galle Face Green, Independence Square, the National Museum and the shopping streets. A good place to spend your last afternoon before an evening flight. Best for: a soft landing and a final day of shopping.

    Practical notes for Indian travellers

    Currency

The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the only currency you can spend — Indian rupees are not accepted, and the two currencies are not interchangeable despite the shared name. Carry US Dollars to exchange on arrival or use a card; cards work well in Colombo and at hotels, less reliably at smaller shops, park entrances and roadside stops, so keep cash for those.

    Food

One of the easiest destinations we sell for Indian travellers. Rice-and-curry is the staple, vegetarian food is normal rather than a special request, and Indian restaurants are common in Colombo and Kandy. Sri Lankan food runs hotter than most Indian palates expect, so ask for it mild if you prefer.

    Time and language

Sri Lanka is on the same clock as India — no time change at all. English is widely spoken, and Tamil is an official language, which makes the country particularly easy for travellers from Tamil Nadu.

    Getting around

Private car with driver on most of our packages. Roads are good but winding, and average speeds are lower than you would expect — a 150-kilometre drive can take four hours. Build that into your expectations and the trip feels relaxed rather than rushed.

    Common mistakes to avoid

    • Paying an agent for the ETA. It is free on the official government portal, and third-party sites charge for nothing.

    • Planning around map distances instead of drive times. Sri Lanka is small and slow.

    • Booking a Yala safari without checking which blocks are open on your dates.

    • Assuming the Kandy–Ella train can be booked on the day. Reserved seats go weeks ahead.

    • Doing the standard west-and-south circuit between May and September, when the south-west monsoon is at its peak. Go east instead.

    • Squeezing Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Galle and a safari into five nights. Pick three.

    • Carrying Indian rupees expecting to spend them.

    Sri Lanka package FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka?

You need a tourist ETA, and for Indian passport holders it is free — no fee, no embassy visit, no visa sticker. It gives you 30 days with double entry. Apply online at eta.gov.lk before you fly; it takes a few minutes and approval usually arrives the same day.

Is the Sri Lanka ETA really free, or is there a hidden charge?

It is genuinely free for Indian nationals. India has had fee-free access since 2023 and the scheme was extended to 40 countries from 25 May 2026. Any site charging you a government fee is not the official portal — the only legitimate one is eta.gov.lk. The business ETA is separate and does carry a fee.

Can I just turn up without applying?

A walk-in visa-on-arrival is available at Colombo, and there has been some public confusion about whether the online form is still required. Our advice either way is to complete the free online application before you travel — it costs nothing and means you skip the arrival queue.

How long can I stay, and can I extend?

30 days on the tourist ETA, with double entry so you can leave and return once within that window. Extensions are available in Colombo for a fee. Apply before your 30 days run out — overstaying is treated seriously.

Are there direct flights from India to Sri Lanka?

Yes, from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Mumbai and Delhi to Colombo. IndiGo alone runs over 55 weekly flights from five cities and SriLankan serves around ten. Chennai to Colombo is about 1 hour 20 minutes. Jaffna in the north is also served direct from Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.

How much does a Sri Lanka trip cost from India?

Our packages run from around ₹28,500 per person for a three-night Kandy and Bentota trip to ₹89,500 for a longer hills, Ella and coast itinerary. Hotel category, meal plan, private versus shared transport and whether a safari is included are what move the number.

How many days do I need?

Three nights covers Kandy and a beach comfortably. Five or six gives you the classic hills-and-coast circuit. Seven to nine lets you add Sigiriya, Ella, Galle or a wildlife park — but not all of them.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

December to March for the standard Colombo–Kandy–Nuwara Eliya–Bentota circuit. Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so mid-year trips are better spent on the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay than on the south-west.

Which national park should I choose?

Yala for leopards, but it is busy and its main blocks close periodically — Blocks 1 and 2 are shut from 14 September to 15 October 2026. Udawalawe for reliable elephant sightings and a quieter experience, which suits most first-time visitors. Wilpattu if you want somewhere wilder and less visited.

Should I visit Pinnawala or the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home?

Both are legitimate and we will arrange either. Pinnawala offers close-up feeding and river bathing, and has been criticised on welfare grounds; since 1995 genuinely orphaned calves have gone to the Transit Home instead. Udawalawe raises orphans for release, with viewing from a distance and no interaction. Tell us which you would prefer.

Can I book the Kandy to Ella train?

Yes, but reserved seats release a limited window in advance and sell out quickly. Tell us at the time of booking and we will secure seats as soon as they open rather than trying on the day.

    What currency should I carry?

Sri Lankan Rupees are the only usable currency — Indian rupees are not accepted. Carry US Dollars to exchange on arrival or use a card. Keep cash for park entrances, smaller shops and roadside stops.

Is Sri Lanka easy for vegetarians?

Yes, one of the easiest destinations we sell. Rice-and-curry is largely vegetable-based, vegetarian food is standard rather than a special request, and Indian restaurants are common in Colombo and Kandy. The food is spicier than most Indian palates expect, so ask for it mild.

What is included in a Bayard Sri Lanka package?

Hotels, daily breakfast (half-board on many itineraries), a private car or coach with a dedicated driver throughout, sightseeing and entrance fees as named in your plan, and on-trip support. International airfare, insurance, optional activities and personal expenses are quoted separately unless bundled.
