Uttarakhand Tour Packages

An Uttarakhand package costs roughly ₹15,000 to ₹45,000+ per person, and the state gives you four genuinely different holidays: the Char Dham pilgrimage, the Ganga at Haridwar and Rishikesh, tiger country at Corbett, and the old hill stations of Nainital and Mussoorie.

The one thing to settle before anything else: almost everything in Uttarakhand has a season, and the seasons don’t line up. The Char Dham temples are open only from late April to early November. Corbett’s best safari zones close from mid-June to mid-November. The Valley of Flowers blooms June to early October. And from 14 January to 20 April 2027, Haridwar hosts the Ardh Kumbh Mela the largest gathering the state sees in six years.

Below, we set out exactly what is open in which month, the free government registration every Char Dham traveller is legally required to complete, honest flight times from your city, and the two official portals that protect you from the booking fraud that plagues this route.

Uttarakhand trip at a glance

Do you need a visa or permit for Uttarakhand?

No visa, no permit. Uttarakhand is a domestic destination and a valid government photo ID Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence or passport is all you need for travel and hotel check-in across Nainital, Corbett, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Auli, Ranikhet, Dhanaulti and Chopta.

But if you are going to the Char Dham, one registration is legally mandatory.

Every pilgrim travelling to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath must register with the Uttarakhand government before travelling.

• It is compulsory. Checkpoints on the route Sonprayag for Kedarnath, Pandukeshwar for Badrinath, and at the temple entries — verify your Yatra pass. Arriving without one means being turned back.

• It is free. There is no charge, ever. Anyone asking you to pay for a registration or a Unique Registration Number is running a fraud.

• It is done at one official site: registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, with an official app and WhatsApp option, plus offline counters that open at Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun shortly before the season.

• Register early. Peak-season slots for May and June fill fast, and daily visitor limits apply at each shrine.

• You need it before you can book a Kedarnath helicopter. The official booking portal blocks payment without a valid registration number this is the step most first-timers miss.

Char Dham booking fraud and how to avoid it

This route attracts more booking fraud than almost any other in Indian travel. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued public alerts about it. We would rather tell you plainly than let you find out at a helipad.

How the fraud works. Criminals register web addresses that differ by a single character from the official portals, clone the design and logos, and buy paid search advertising so their fake pages appear above the real government site. They call back within minutes, speak convincingly about boarding procedures, create urgency about seat availability, and ask for payment to a personal UPI ID or bank account. They then issue a realistic-looking confirmation with a reference number. The fraud is discovered on the day, at the helipad.

What protects you:

• Char Dham registration is only at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, and it is free. Anyone charging for it is fraudulent.

• The Kedarnath shuttle helicopter is bookable only at heliyatra.irctc.co.in. No travel agent, no tour operator, no hotel, no WhatsApp “authorised agent” and no social media page can legally sell those tickets. That includes us we will tell you honestly that we cannot sell you a Kedarnath shuttle seat, because nobody but IRCTC can.

• Type portal addresses manually. Do not reach them through a search advertisement.

• Treat “confirmed tickets”, “VIP quota” and “priority slots” as fraud markers. Those categories do not exist.

• If you have been defrauded, the national cybercrime helpline is 1930 and reports can be filed at cybercrime.gov.in.

What we can honestly do: complete your free registration, build your itinerary around realistic helicopter availability rather than promising it, arrange private charter where it is genuinely available, and plan pony, palki or trekking alternatives properly so the trip works whether or not a shuttle seat comes through.

What’s actually open when Uttarakhand’s seasonal access table

More than almost anywhere else in India, Uttarakhand is governed by fixed opening seasons, and several popular combinations are simply not possible in one trip. This is the table we wish every Uttarakhand page published.

What this means in practice

• Char Dham and Dhikala together works only in a narrow window at the end of April and start of June. Ask us before assuming it fits your dates.

• Char Dham and Valley of Flowers works well from June to early October, and they sit on the same road — Govindghat is on the Badrinath route.

• Kumbh and Char Dham can be combined in April 2027: the mela closes on the 20th and the Char Dham season opens within days. This is an unusual and genuinely special sequence.

• A January Kedarnath trip is not possible. The temple is closed and the deity is at its winter seat at Ukhimath. If someone offers you one, they are selling you something that doesn’t exist.

Haridwar Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027

14 January to 20 April 2027. Haridwar hosts the Ardh Kumbh — the half-Kumbh that falls roughly every six years along the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri, with the main bathing at Brahmakund.

Choosing your dates honestly. The three Amrit Snan days are the spiritual peak and also, by a wide margin, the most crowded days of the mela general access to Har Ki Pauri is restricted or staggered around the akhara processions. If you are travelling with elderly parents or young children, the other bathing days and the quieter stretches between them give you the same river, the same city and the same atmosphere with a fraction of the pressure. We will tell you frankly which dates suit who is travelling.

Book accommodation early. Haridwar’s rooms are the binding constraint on any Kumbh trip, and they go long before the dates do. This is the one thing that cannot be fixed later.

Which Uttarakhand circuit is right for you?

Garhwal spiritual and hill circuit Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti

The easiest and most popular Uttarakhand trip. Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, the ashrams and river of Rishikesh, and the colonial hill stations above Dehradun. 3–5 nights, open year-round, and the shortest road transfers in the state. Best for first-time visitors, honeymooners and families.

Kumaon lakes and wildlife Nainital, Corbett, Ranikhet

The lake town, the tiger reserve and the quiet Kumaon ridges. 4–6 nights. Reached via Delhi and Kathgodam, not via Dehradun Nainital is 7–8 hours by road from Dehradun and much closer to Delhi. Gated by Corbett’s zone seasons. Best for families, wildlife travellers and couples.

Char Dham and high Garhwal Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath

The state’s defining pilgrimage. 8–12 nights for all four; a Do Dham of Kedarnath and Badrinath fits in 5–7. Late April to early November only. Requires registration, real fitness and honest altitude planning. Best for pilgrims, and only for those the itinerary genuinely suits.

Haridwar Ardh Kumbh January to April 2027 only

2–4 nights, easily combined with Rishikesh, and available only in this window.

Combining circuits

Garhwal and Kumaon are on opposite sides of the state and are usually done via Delhi rather than across. Char Dham combines naturally with Haridwar and Rishikesh, which sit at the start of the route anyway, and with the Valley of Flowers, which sits on the Badrinath road. It does not combine easily with Nainital or Corbett ask us before assuming it does.

• Pony, palki and porter charges on the Kedarnath and Yamunotri ascents, which vary by season and are paid locally.

Getting to Uttarakhand from your city

Dehradun (DED) is the main gateway for Garhwal, Rishikesh, Mussoorie and the Char Dham. For Nainital and Corbett, flying to Delhi is usually the better routing.

The road leg matters more than the flight

This is the part most itineraries gloss over, and it decides whether your trip works.

• From Dehradun: Rishikesh about 1 hour, Haridwar about 1.5 hours, Mussoorie about 1.5 hours. All comfortable same-day transfers.

• For Nainital and Corbett: fly to Delhi. Nainital is 7–8 hours by road from Dehradun but far closer to Delhi and Kathgodam, which is also well served by train.

• For Kedarnath: Sonprayag, the road head, is a full day’s drive from Dehradun or Haridwar. From Gaurikund it is a further 16–18 km on foot, or by pony or palki. Nobody lands at Dehradun and reaches Kedarnath the same day, and any itinerary suggesting otherwise is not being straight with you.

• By rail: Haridwar and Rishikesh are well connected from Delhi, and Kathgodam is the rail head for Nainital. If you are combining Uttarakhand with a Delhi or Uttar Pradesh leg, the train is often the better link.

Altitude, fitness and travelling with older parents

A large share of Char Dham travellers come from South India from Bengaluru at around 900 metres, or from Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad at or near sea level. The Char Dham route puts you above 3,500 metres within a few days. This deserves a straight conversation rather than a disclaimer.

The altitudes: Kedarnath around 3,580 m, Badrinath around 3,300 m, Tungnath around 3,680 m, Chandrashila above 4,000 m.

What we plan for:

• Acclimatisation nights built into the ascent rather than a straight run up from the plains.

• The Kedarnath ascent, honestly. It is 16–18 km from Gaurikund on foot. Pony, palki and porter options exist and we will explain what each actually involves in time, cost and comfort rather than describing them as an easy alternative.

• A medical check before you travel, which we recommend for anyone over 55 or with cardiac, respiratory or blood-pressure conditions and which is worth having in hand regardless.

• Honest routing advice. For some travellers, a Do Dham of Kedarnath and Badrinath, or a Haridwar–Rishikesh trip with darshan at the winter seats, is genuinely the better trip. If that is our view for your parents, we will say so.

Monsoon and mountain roads an honest note

July and August in Uttarakhand are not simply “wetter.” Landslides close the Rishikesh Badrinath and Rishikesh Gangotri highways most seasons, sometimes for days, and the state administration suspends the Char Dham Yatra during heavy-rain warnings. This is not a hypothetical risk Uttarakhand has a documented history of serious monsoon events on exactly these routes.

What that means for planning: we do not recommend the Char Dham in July or August, and we build buffer days into any yatra itinerary that runs close to the monsoon shoulders. The same rain that closes those roads is what makes the Valley of Flowers bloom, so if monsoon is your only travel window, that is the trip we would point you towards instead.

Practical notes for travellers

Haridwar and Rishikesh are alcohol-free and vegetarian

Both are declared holy cities. Alcohol and meat are prohibited and the rules are enforced, including in hotels. This surprises people planning a honeymoon or a celebration, so it is worth knowing before you book.

What to pack

Even in summer, evenings above 2,000 metres are cold, and the Char Dham shrines are genuinely cold year-round. Layers, a windproof outer, proper walking shoes with grip, and a raincoat regardless of season. For the yatra, add a torch, a basic first-aid kit and any regular medication in your hand luggage rather than in a bag on a pony.

Temple etiquette

Modest dress at all shrines. Shoes come off well before the entrance. Photography is restricted or prohibited inside several temples, including at the Char Dham shrines.

Mountain roads

Uttarakhand’s roads are winding and slow. Distances that look short on a map take hours. If anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness, tell us it changes how we schedule the driving days.

Connectivity

Mobile signal is patchy to absent on the higher yatra routes and inside Corbett’s core zones. Tell family at home not to worry about silent days, and download offline maps and your registration pass before you leave the valley.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Planning Kedarnath or Badrinath between November and April. The temples are closed.

• Travelling to the Char Dham without completing the free government registration, and being turned back at Sonprayag or Pandukeshwar.

• Paying anyone for that registration, which is free.

• Booking a Kedarnath helicopter through an agent, a WhatsApp number or a search advertisement rather than IRCTC’s own portal.

• Booking Corbett in August expecting Dhikala. It closes mid-June and reopens mid-November.

• Flying to Dehradun for a Nainital trip. Delhi is the better gateway.

• Assuming Bengaluru to Dehradun is a short hop. It is a little over three hours in the air, plus the road leg.

• Attempting the Char Dham in July or August.

• Underestimating the Kedarnath walk, particularly for older travellers.

Do I need a visa or permit for Uttarakhand?

No. Uttarakhand is a domestic destination and a valid government photo ID is all you need. The one exception is the Char Dham: travellers to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath must complete a free mandatory government registration before travelling.

What is the Char Dham Yatra registration, and does it cost anything?

It is a compulsory registration with the Uttarakhand government for all four shrines, done at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. It is completely free and produces a Yatra pass with a unique registration number, which is checked at road checkpoints including Sonprayag and Pandukeshwar. Anyone charging you for it is running a fraud. We complete it for our travellers at no charge.

When is the Char Dham Yatra open?

The four shrines open in late April and close in early to mid November. In 2026, Yamunotri and Gangotri opened on 19 April (Akshaya Tritiya), Kedarnath on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April, with closings expected between 10 and 13 November. Exact dates are set each year by the temple committee.

Can I visit Kedarnath in December or January?

No. The temple closes for winter around mid-November and the deity is moved to its winter seat at Ukhimath, where darshan continues through the closed season. Anyone selling you a winter Kedarnath temple visit is selling something that doesn’t exist.

When is the next Kumbh Mela in Uttarakhand?

The Haridwar Ardh Kumbh Mela runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027, with bathing at Brahmakund, Har Ki Pauri. The three Amrit Snan days the largest of the mela are 6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027. It is a public gathering and entry is free; what needs booking, well ahead, is accommodation.

Should I go on an Amrit Snan day at the Kumbh?

It depends who’s travelling. Those three days are the spiritual peak and by far the most crowded, with restricted and staggered access around the akhara processions. If you’re with elderly parents or small children, the other bathing days give you the same river and atmosphere with far less pressure. Tell us who’s coming and we’ll advise honestly.

How do I book a Kedarnath helicopter?

Only through IRCTC’s official portal at heliyatra.irctc.co.in. No travel agent, tour operator or WhatsApp “authorised agent” can legally sell those tickets including us. You need a valid Char Dham registration number before you can complete payment. Fake booking sites are a well-documented problem on this route, so type the address manually rather than clicking a search advertisement.

How long is the walk to Kedarnath?

About 16 to 18 kilometres from Gaurikund, with no road access to the temple. Pony, palki and porter options are available and we’ll explain honestly what each involves. It is a demanding day and should be planned as one, particularly for older travellers.

Is Uttarakhand suitable for elderly parents?

Much of it, very much so Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Nainital and Corbett are all comfortable. The Char Dham is a different question: it involves sustained altitude above 3,500 metres and a long ascent to Kedarnath. We’d want to talk through their health honestly, and sometimes we’ll recommend a Do Dham or a Haridwar–Rishikesh trip instead.

What is the best time to visit Uttarakhand?

There’s no single answer, because different attractions have different seasons. Char Dham is late April to early November. Corbett’s best zones are mid-November to mid-June. The Valley of Flowers is June to early October. Haridwar and the hill stations work year-round. Tell us what you want to see and we’ll tell you when it’s possible.

Are there direct flights from Bangalore to Uttarakhand?

Yes — there’s a daily nonstop from Bengaluru to Dehradun, taking a little over three hours. Hyderabad also has a daily nonstop, around two and a half hours. Chennai, Kochi and most other South Indian cities connect via Delhi. For a Nainital or Corbett trip, flying to Delhi is usually the better routing regardless.

Which Corbett zone will I get?

It depends entirely on your dates. Dhikala the one most people mean, and the only zone with in-park night stays runs 15 November to 15 June. Bijrani runs 15 October to 30 June. Jhirna, Dhela, Garjiya and Sitabani are open year-round. Permits are limited and book out weeks ahead, so we secure them as early as we can.

Is the Char Dham safe during the monsoon?

We don’t recommend it in July or August. Landslides close the Rishikesh Badrinath and Rishikesh Gangotri highways most seasons and the state suspends the yatra during heavy-rain warnings. If monsoon is your only window, the Valley of Flowers is the trip we’d point you to instead it only blooms because of that rain.

Can I drink alcohol or eat non-vegetarian food in Haridwar and Rishikesh?

No. Both are declared holy cities where alcohol and meat are prohibited, and the rules are enforced including in hotels. Worth knowing before you book a honeymoon or a celebration there.
