Sun, Sand, and Coastal escapes. Unwind along beaches, cuisines, and wander through historic Portuguese architecture.
Where Portuguese Charm Meets Indian Vibrancy: Sun-Kissed Beaches, Ancient Churches, and the Spirit of Susegad (Contentment).
The history of Goa is a distinct combination of 450 years of Portuguese colonialism and local Konkani culture. In 1510, Old Goa was made a colony by Afonso de Albuquerque and became a significant trading center, earning its nickname as the “Rome of the East.” Today, tourists travel to North Goa to see its pristine beaches, while others visit South Goa to enjoy its Latin quarters, which offer a seamless Indo-Portuguese cultural amalgamation not available anywhere else in India.
Four centuries of Portuguese rule profoundly shaped Goa's identity, architecture, cuisine, and language. The stunning Basilica of Bom Jesus, Sé Cathedral, and dozens of churches reflect Baroque and Manueline architectural styles unique in India. Portuguese words permeate Konkani (local language). The introduction of bread (pão), potatoes, tomatoes, cashews, and the distillation tradition for feni liquor remain Portuguese legacies. Even today, Goan surnames reflect Portuguese heritage. This colonial past, while contested, is undeniably woven into Goa's cultural fabric and tourist appeal.
Unique in India, Goa's Hindu and Christian communities coexist harmoniously, often celebrating each other's festivals. Hindu temples were protected during Portuguese rule; Catholic churches welcomed all. Inter-faith marriages are common. Local customs blend Catholic saints' days with Hindu rituals. Goan Christmas celebrations feature Hindu elements; Hindu weddings incorporate Portuguese-influenced music. This syncretism reflects centuries of peaceful coexistence and creates Goa's distinctly tolerant, inclusive culture—a model of religious harmony often celebrated globally.
Susegad (pronounced 'soo-seh-gahd') embodies Goa's philosophy of contentment, relaxation, and enjoying life's simple pleasures without rushing. This Portuguese-influenced mindset prioritizes leisure, family, and celebration over material ambition. Seen in the tradition of post-lunch naps, leisurely tea breaks, beach lounging, and evening strolls, susegad defines Goan culture. This approach attracts weary travelers seeking respite from modern hustle. Goan businesses often close during siesta; locals unwind at shacks with friends and feni. Susegad isn't laziness—it's deliberate, mindful living.
Goa boasts India's highest per capita income (3.1x the national average) and the strongest GSDP growth. With 0.1% of India's population, it generates 0.4% of GDP—extraordinary productivity. Mining (iron ore, bauxite), tourism, agriculture, and modern industries drive prosperity. Unlike many states, Goa maintains efficient infrastructure, healthcare, and education. This wealth, combined with cultural richness, attracts both luxury tourism and quality-of-life seekers. However, rapid development poses challenges: environmental degradation, cultural erosion, and wealth inequality—concerns Goa grapples with today.
Goa packages with Bayard start at ₹8,000 per person for a two-day break and run to ₹20,000 for a five-day circuit. From Bengaluru it is an hour in the air, which makes Goa the one place you can go twice a year without it being an expedition.
Two decisions shape the whole trip, and most people make them by accident. Which airport you fly into Goa has two now, seventy kilometres apart — and which coast you stay on. Get them wrong together and you spend two hours and ₹1,500 in a taxi before your holiday starts.
Below: how to choose the airport and the coast, what each of our packages actually covers, and an honest answer about the monsoon.

Field | Detail |
Ideal duration | 2–3 nights for a beach break; 3–4 nights to add forts, spice plantations and Old Goa; 5+ nights to do both coasts properly |
Cost | ₹8,000–₹20,000 per person on our packages, land only, depending on nights and hotel category |
Best season | November to February. Late December is peak — Christmas, New Year and Sunburn — and priced accordingly. June to September is monsoon, and that changes the trip completely |
Entry | Domestic. A valid photo ID is all you need |
Airports | Manohar / Mopa (GOX) for North Goa; Dabolim (GOI) for South Goa. They are 70km apart — see the section below |
From Bengaluru | About an hour by air, 585km by road, or overnight by train to Madgaon |
Getting around | Taxis, the GoaMiles app, or a hired scooter. Distances are short but the north–south transfer takes about 90 minutes |
Which airport? This is the decision most people get wrong
Goa has had two airports since January 2023, and they are on opposite sides of the state. Booking the one that does not match your hotel is the most common and most expensive planning mistake people make here.
Airport | Where it is | Fly here if you are staying at |
Manohar International (GOX), Mopa | North Goa, Pernem taluka — about 35km from Panaji | Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Candolim, Morjim, Ashwem, Arambol |
Dabolim (GOI) | South-central Goa, near Vasco | Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim, Majorda, Palolem, Agonda |
Get it wrong and you are looking at roughly two hours and around ₹1,500 in taxi fares, each way, before your holiday starts. Get it right and you are at your hotel in thirty to forty minutes.
When we book your flights and hotel together, we match them. If you are booking flights yourself, check the airport code before you pay — GOX and GOI are both listed simply as "Goa" on most booking sites.
This is the other decision, and it matters more than which hotel you pick. The two halves of Goa are genuinely different holidays.
• North Goa - Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator, Candolim. Busy, lively and social. Beach shacks along the sand, water sports, markets, clubs and the widest choice of places to eat. Best for first-time visitors, groups, younger travellers and anyone who wants things happening around them.
• South Goa - Palolem, Agonda, Varca, Cavelossim, Benaulim. Quiet, green and spread out. Wide empty beaches, resorts and villas, and very little noise. Best for couples, families with small children, older travellers and anyone whose idea of a holiday is a book and a beach.
• Both - possible on four nights or more, splitting two and two. The transfer is about ninety minutes. Worth it if it is your first trip and you want to know which one you are for.
• Our rule of thumb: if you want to be able to walk to dinner and there be a choice, go north. If you want to hear the sea, go south.
Package | Duration | Coast | Price (per person) |
A Short Break to Goa | 2D / 1N | [Confirm North / South] | ₹8,000 |
Goa: A Perfect Getaway | 3D / 2N | [Confirm North / South] | ₹11,000 |
The Ideal Getaway for Goa | 4D / 3N | [Confirm North / South / both] | ₹16,000 |
A Complete 5-Day Goa Tour | 5D / 4N | [Confirm North / South / both] | ₹20,000 |
What moves the price
• Hotel category and how close to the beach you are. In North Goa, walking distance to the sand carries a real premium and is usually worth it.
• Season. November to February is peak. Late December is a market of its own. April, May and the monsoon months are dramatically cheaper.
• Which coast. South Goa skews toward resorts and villas; North Goa has more at the budget end.
• Which activities are bundled - water sports, the dolphin trip, spice plantation with lunch, a Mandovi cruise.
• Whether flights from your city are included.

Months | What it’s like | Verdict |
November–February | Dry, warm days, cool evenings. Shacks open, water sports running, sea calm. The Goa everyone pictures | The season. Book December well ahead — see below |
March–May | Hot and humid, but everything is still open and prices soften from March | Good value if you plan beach time for early morning and evening |
June–September | Monsoon. Beach shacks are dismantled, water sports suspended, and swimming is not advised. Green, dramatic and very cheap | A different holiday entirely — see below. Not a beach holiday |
October | Transition. Rain easing, shacks going back up, everything reopening in stages | Improving week by week. Ask us what will be running on your dates |
What monsoon actually closes
We would rather tell you this now than have you find out in July. Goa’s beach shack season officially ends on 31 May, and the shacks are physically taken down by around 10 June — they are removed, not just closed. Drishti Marine, which runs beach safety in Goa, advises against swimming and water activities from June to September, red flags go up across the supervised beaches, and even wading is discouraged. State policy suspends water sports in monsoon conditions.
So if your picture of Goa is a shack, a sunbed and a jet ski, June to September is the wrong window and we will say so.
What monsoon is genuinely good for
Quite a lot, and it costs a fraction of December. Dudhsagar Falls at full flow is spectacular and only really worth seeing in and just after the rains. Spice plantations are at their greenest. Old Goa’s churches and the Latin quarter at Fontainhas in Panaji are better without crowds. The offshore casinos on the Mandovi run year-round because they are entirely indoors. And the food, which is half the reason to come, is unaffected by weather.
Monsoon Goa is a real holiday. It is just not a beach holiday, and anyone selling it as one is not being straight with you.
A note on late December
Christmas, New Year and the Sunburn festival turn the last fortnight of December into the most expensive and most constrained period of the Goan year. Hotels are booked months ahead and rates run at a multiple of November. If that is the trip you want, plan it by August. If it is not, the first half of December and all of January and February give you the same weather for far less.
The North Goa beaches
Calangute and Baga for the crowds, the shacks and the water sports; Anjuna for the rocky shore, the sunsets and the Wednesday flea market; Vagator and Candolim for something a little calmer while staying in reach of everything. Tito’s Lane is the nightlife strip and is exactly what you expect it to be.
The South Goa beaches
Palolem’s crescent bay with its boat trips, Agonda for the quietest sand in the state, and Varca, Cavelossim and Benaulim for the long empty stretches the resorts sit behind. Nothing much happens here after dark, which is the point.
Old Goa and Panaji
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, built between 1594 and 1605, holds the remains of St Francis Xavier and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Sé Cathedral of 1561 next door is the largest church in Asia. Half a day covers both. Panaji’s Fontainhas quarter — narrow lanes, Portuguese townhouses, painted in ochre and blue — is the most photogenic corner of Goa and takes an hour to walk.
Forts and viewpoints
Fort Aguada above Candolim, built in 1612 with its lighthouse over the Arabian Sea, and Chapora Fort for the sunset. Cabo de Rama in the far south is the quietest and arguably the best of them.
Spice plantations and inland Goa
An hour inland and a different state entirely cardamom, pepper and vanilla under the canopy, a traditional Goan lunch on a banana leaf, and no beach in sight. One of the better half-days in Goa and it works in any weather. Dudhsagar Falls is beyond it, and is at its best from July through October.
The markets
The Anjuna Flea Market runs on Wednesdays only, and only in season. If your trip does not include a Wednesday, the Saturday Night Market at Arpora is the alternative and is arguably more fun. We will tell you which one falls in your dates rather than promising both.
The casinos
Offshore on the Mandovi at Panaji Deltin Royale, Big Daddy, Majestic Pride and unique in India. Entry packages usually include a buffet and chips. They run every day of the year, which makes them one of the few reliable options if the weather turns.
Beach safety worth thirty seconds of your attention
Goa loses more tourists to drowning than most people realise, and almost all of it is avoidable. Drishti Marine lifeguards operate a flag system on the supervised beaches: swim between the flags, and treat a red flag as an instruction rather than a suggestion. The rips at Baga and Calangute are real. And never go into the sea after drinking — that is the single biggest factor in Goan drowning incidents, every year.
Getting around
Taxis are plentiful and the GoaMiles app gives you fixed fares, which avoids the negotiation. Hired scooters are the local way and are genuinely the best way to see Goa — but you need a valid licence, helmets are compulsory and enforced, and the roads are busier than they look. If you have not ridden in a while, this is not the place to start.
The north–south transfer is about ninety minutes, which is worth remembering if you are splitting your stay.
Food and drink
Seafood is the obvious answer and it deserves the reputation, but Goan vegetarian food is excellent too and every shack has a proper vegetarian section this is not a destination where vegetarians struggle. Try the Goan bread, the pork if you eat it, and feni once, in the knowledge that once is usually enough. Alcohol is cheap in Goa and that catches people out, particularly around swimming.
Common mistakes to avoid
• Flying into the wrong airport for your beach. Two hours and ₹1,500 each way.
• Booking North Goa when you wanted quiet, or South Goa when you wanted things to do.
• Planning a beach holiday between June and September. The shacks are physically gone.
• Assuming the Anjuna Flea Market runs daily. Wednesdays only, in season.
• Leaving late December to the last minute. It books out months ahead at multiples of normal rates.
• Swimming outside the flags, or after drinking.
• Renting a scooter without a licence or a helmet.
• Trying to cover both coasts in two nights. The transfer alone is ninety minutes.
Included | Not included |

Why book Goa with Bayard Vacations
• We match your airport to your hotel. Goa has two airports seventy kilometres apart, and getting that pairing right is worth two hours and ₹1,500 each way.
• We ask which coast before we book. North and South Goa are different holidays and the wrong one is a wasted trip.
• Straight seasonal advice, including telling you not to come in July if you want a beach holiday — and what to do instead if you are coming anyway.
• Markets, cruises and activities checked against your actual dates rather than promised generically.
• Well-located hotels rather than cheap ones a long taxi ride from anywhere.
• An hour from Bengaluru, and we can turn a quote around fast enough for a long weekend.
Talk to us about Goa →
Which Goa airport should I fly into?
It depends entirely on your beach. Manohar International (GOX) at Mopa is in North Goa and suits Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim and Arambol. Dabolim (GOI) is in the south and suits Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim, Palolem and Agonda. They are about 70km apart, and choosing wrong costs roughly two hours and ₹1,500 in taxi each way. Check the code when you book — both show as "Goa" on most sites.
North Goa or South Goa?
North for shacks, water sports, markets, nightlife and plenty of places to eat within walking distance — best for first-timers, groups and younger travellers. South for wide quiet beaches, resorts and villas, and very little noise best for couples, families with small children and older travellers. On four nights or more you can do both, splitting two and two.
How many days do I need in Goa?
Two nights works for a beach weekend, and that is our ₹8,000 package. Three or four lets you add Old Goa, a fort and a spice plantation. Five or more if you want both coasts properly. Goa rewards doing less than you planned.
How much does a Goa trip cost?
Our packages run from ₹8,000 per person for two days to ₹20,000 for five, land only. Hotel category, how close to the beach you are, season and which activities are bundled are what move the number. Late December is a market of its own.
Is Goa worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, but not as a beach holiday. The beach shack season officially ends on 31 May and the shacks are physically removed by around 10 June. Swimming and water sports are not advised from June to September and red flags go up across the supervised beaches. What does work: Dudhsagar Falls at full flow, spice plantations, Old Goa, Fontainhas, the casinos and the food — at a fraction of December prices.
When do the beach shacks operate?
Roughly from the start of the season through to 31 May, after which the structures are dismantled by around 10 June. If beach shacks are the point of your trip, travel between October and May.
Can I do water sports in Goa in July?
No. Goa’s water sports policy suspends activity in monsoon and unsafe weather, and Drishti Marine advises against swimming and sea activities from June to September. Parasailing, jet ski and banana rides are generally not running.
When is the Anjuna Flea Market?
Wednesdays only, and only during the tourist season. If your trip does not include a Wednesday, the Saturday Night Market at Arpora is the alternative. We check which falls in your dates rather than promising both.
What is the best time to visit Goa?
November to February dry, warm days and cool evenings, with everything open. March to May is hot but good value. June to September is monsoon. Note that the last two weeks of December are peak, with Christmas, New Year and Sunburn, and are priced accordingly.
How far ahead should I book for New Year in Goa?
Months. The last fortnight of December is the most constrained period of the Goan year and hotels sell out well in advance at a multiple of November rates. If you want that week, plan it by August.
Is it safe to swim at Goa’s beaches?
At the supervised beaches, between the flags, yes. Drishti Marine lifeguards operate a flag system and red flags mean do not enter. The rips at Baga and Calangute are genuine. The single biggest factor in Goan drowning incidents every year is alcohol never go into the sea after drinking.
Can I rent a scooter in Goa?
Yes, and it is the best way to get around. You need a valid licence, helmets are compulsory and enforced, and the roads are busier than they look. If you have not ridden recently, take taxis or use the GoaMiles app instead — it gives fixed fares and avoids the negotiation.
Is Goa good for vegetarians?
Very. Goa is famous for seafood but Goan vegetarian food is excellent, and every shack and restaurant has a proper vegetarian section. This is not a destination where vegetarians have to compromise.
Are the casinos worth doing?
They are unique in India offshore on the Mandovi at Panaji, with entry packages that usually include a buffet and chips. Whether they appeal is personal, but they are worth knowing about for one practical reason: they run every day of the year, indoors, which makes them one of the few reliable options if the weather turns.
What is included in a Bayard Goa package?
Hotels on the coast that suits your trip, daily breakfast, airport or station transfers matched to the right airport, local sightseeing transfers, specified activities such as the dolphin trip and spice plantation, and on-trip assistance. Airfare, alcohol, optional activities and personal expenses are separate.
