The good news first, because it is recent. In May 2026 the entry rules were relaxed. Indian travellers no longer need a local sponsor from the islands, and no longer need a police clearance certificate from their home police station. Those were the two things that put most people off. A permit is still required it always will be but the process is now genuinely straightforward.

The permit: what it takes now, and what changed

Everyone who is not a native of the islands needs an entry permit including Indian citizens. This is statutory, not discretionary, and it dates from 1967. Without an approved permit you do not board.

What changed in May 2026

Two requirements were removed, and between them they were the reason most people gave up on the idea:

• You no longer need a local sponsor from Lakshadweep. Sponsorship has been dropped entirely for Tourist category applications.

• You no longer need a police clearance certificate from your home police station.

If you looked into Lakshadweep a year ago and decided it was too much trouble, it is worth looking again. Most of what you will read online still describes the old process.

What you do need

• An entry permit, applied for online through the Lakshadweep Administration’s portal under the Tourist category.

• Valid government photo ID for every traveller.

• A confirmed booking the permit is tied to your itinerary and accommodation, which is why it is normally handled alongside the package rather than separately.

• Time. Processing varies by island and season, so we start it as soon as your booking is confirmed rather than close to travel.

Foreign passport holders and OCI cardholders

The relaxations apply to you too, but additional verification still applies and island access is more limited generally Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat rather than the full range. If anyone in your group holds a foreign passport or an OCI card, tell us at the enquiry stage so we can start the process early and choose islands accordingly.

Island-level access has not been entirely stable some islands have gone through operational and approval transitions, and packages are sometimes advertised for islands whose current status is unconfirmed. We verify that the specific island in your itinerary is open and approved before we take a booking, which sounds like a technicality and is the difference between a trip and a refund.

Which island? This is the decision that matters

Lakshadweep has thirty-six islands. Ten are inhabited and fewer are open to visitors. They are genuinely different places, and on an archipelago you commit to one so this is worth thinking about before anything else.

 Our steer: if it is your first trip and you have three or four nights, stay on Agatti. If it is a honeymoon, Bangaram. If you are here for the water, Kadmat. If you want to see several islands rather than one, take the cruise-style itinerary.

• Which island, and whether it is a resort island or an island stay. Bangaram sits well above the rest.

• Flight or ship. A Kochi–Agatti flight and a fifteen-to-twenty-hour ship crossing are different trips at different prices.

• How many islands. Each additional island means another sea transfer.

• Which water sports are bundled. Scuba in particular is a real cost line and worth agreeing upfront.

• Season. October to May is the window and December to February is the peak within it.

When to go

 
An honest note on the monsoon

Lakshadweep is not a year-round destination, whatever you may read. Between roughly mid-May and mid-September the sea state governs everything crossings become rough or impossible, ship services are disrupted, water sports stop, and the inter-island transfers that most itineraries depend on cannot be relied on.

That is not a matter of a wet afternoon. It is the difference between a trip happening and a trip being cancelled at Kochi. If your dates fall in that window we will tell you, and we will suggest either different dates or a different destination rather than take the booking.

What you actually do there

The reefs

This is the reason to come. Lakshadweep’s reefs are among the healthiest in South Asia several hundred coral species and over a thousand fish species, with turtles, rays and reef sharks common. Visibility in the calm months is exceptional. Kadmat and Bangaram are the strongest for diving; Agatti and Kavaratti have good lagoon snorkelling accessible from the beach.|

Diving and water sports

Scuba is available with certification courses for beginners, and the conditions warm, clear, shallow lagoons make it one of the better places in India to learn. Snorkelling, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and glass-bottom boat trips run from most islands. The lagoons and the beaches

The lagoons are what the photographs are of, and they do not disappoint shallow, still, and a colour that does not photograph accurately. Because the islands are coral atolls, the water inside the lagoon is calm even when the open sea is not.

Island life

On the inhabited islands this is a working community rather than a resort strip fishing, coir, coconut, mosques, and a matrilineal social structure unusual anywhere. Kavaratti has the Ujra Mosque and the marine aquarium. Minicoy has the lighthouse and a culture noticeably closer to the Maldives than to Kerala.

Getting there

Everything runs through Kochi, which for anyone in South India is a short domestic hop one of the reasons Lakshadweep is easier to reach from Bengaluru or Chennai than almost any other tropical island.

• By air: Kochi to Agatti, around ninety minutes. Agatti has the territory’s only airport. These are small aircraft with strict baggage limits, capacity is genuinely limited and flights book out so this is booked early or not at all.

• Onward from Agatti: transfers to Bangaram, Kavaratti or Kadmat are by boat or, for Bangaram, sometimes helicopter. These are weather-dependent, which is another reason the season matters.

• By ship: Kochi to the islands takes roughly fifteen to twenty hours. It is a different kind of journey — slower, cheaper, and a genuine experience in itself on the cruise-style itineraries.

Practical notes

Alcohol

Lakshadweep is a dry territory. Bangaram is the exception. If this matters to your trip and on a honeymoon it sometimes does — it affects which island you should be on, so tell us at the enquiry stage.

Connectivity and cash

Mobile coverage is limited and inconsistent across the islands, and internet is slow where it exists. ATMs are few and card acceptance is patchy outside the resort properties. Carry cash from the mainland and treat the trip as a genuine disconnection rather than a working holiday.

The reefs are fragile

Coral is living and slow-growing, and Lakshadweep’s reefs are in good condition partly because visitor numbers have always been capped. Do not stand on coral, do not touch or take anything, use reef-safe sunscreen, and follow your dive guide. This is not boilerplate it is why the reef you came to see still looks like that.

Food and pace

Seafood, coconut and Kerala-influenced cooking, with vegetarian options available but a narrower range than on the mainland. Tell us about strict vegetarian or Jain requirements at booking so the property can plan. And expect a slow pace there is very little to do in the evenings, which is either the point or the problem depending on the traveller.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Assuming Indians do not need a permit. Everyone does, including Indian citizens.

• Reading old guidance about sponsors and police clearance certificates. Both were removed in May 2026.

• Booking an island without checking its current operational status.

• Planning a trip between mid-May and mid-September.

• Leaving Kochi–Agatti flights late. Capacity is limited and they fill.

• Packing to the usual airline baggage allowance. The Agatti aircraft are small and the limits are strict.

• Expecting Maldives-style resort infrastructure. That is not what this is, and it is not trying to be.

• Expecting alcohol anywhere other than Bangaram.

Do Indians need a permit for Lakshadweep?

Which island should I choose?

Agatti for a first trip or a shorter stay it has the airport and needs no extra transfer. Bangaram for a honeymoon or a resort-island escape, and it is the only island where alcohol is permitted. Kadmat for diving and marine activities. Kavaratti for a more conventional island stay with some life around it. Minicoy if you want somewhere genuinely different.

When is the best time to visit?

October to May. October to February has the calmest seas and best visibility; March to early May is warmer, quieter and better value. Avoid mid-May to mid-September.

Can I visit during the monsoon?

We would not recommend it and we generally will not sell it. From roughly mid-May to mid-September the sea is rough, ship services are disrupted or suspended, water sports stop, and inter-island transfers become unreliable. This is not a wet-afternoon problem it is the difference between a trip happening and being cancelled at Kochi.

How do I get to Lakshadweep?

Through Kochi. Flights to Agatti take about ninety minutes on small aircraft with strict baggage limits, and capacity is limited so they book out. Ships from Kochi take roughly fifteen to twenty hours. Onward transfers from Agatti to other islands are by boat or helicopter and are weather-dependent.

How much does a Lakshadweep trip cost?

Is alcohol available in Lakshadweep?

No, except on Bangaram. Lakshadweep is a dry territory and Bangaram is the long-standing exception. If it matters to your trip it affects which island you should be on, so mention it when you enquire.

Is Lakshadweep better than the Maldives?

Different, and we sell both so we have no reason to push you either way. Lakshadweep is closer, cheaper, needs no visa, and the reefs are in better condition than a lot of what the Maldives sells at the same price. The Maldives has far more accommodation choice, better resort infrastructure and simpler logistics. Tell us what you want from the trip and we will tell you honestly which fits.

Is Lakshadweep good for diving?

Very. Warm, clear, shallow lagoons and healthy reefs make it one of the better places in India to dive and one of the best to learn. Kadmat has the strongest marine programme, and Bangaram is excellent. Certification courses are available check minimum ages with us if you are travelling with children.

How many islands can I visit?

On a short trip, one. The cruise-style itineraries cover several typically Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Minicoy with island visits by day and nights on board. Each additional island on a land-based trip means another sea transfer, which is why most first trips stay put.

Will my phone work?

Patchily. Mobile coverage is limited and inconsistent across the islands and internet is slow where it exists. ATMs are few and card acceptance is unreliable outside resort properties, so carry cash from the mainland.

What is included in a Bayard Lakshadweep package?
