Ladakh is not a place that can be rushed. With forced acclimatization days, long drives through some of the highest motorable passes in the world and a necessary inner line permit for places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake, a trip to Ladakh’s importance to travel duration is greater than perhaps anywhere else in India. Too short a trip to Ladakh risks altitude sickness and ignored permits for too long offers no economic rationale or excess redundant day.
Based on the itineraries we build at Bayard Vacations, 6 nights and 7 days is the realistic sweet spot for a first-time Ladakh trip that covers Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake without rushing. This guide walks through why that duration works, what a well-paced Ladakh tour package actually looks like day by day, and how to decide if you need more or less time.
Why Ladakh Requires More Careful Planning Than Most Hill Treks
Leh is situated at about 3,500 metres above sea level, and places like Khardung La pass – more than 5,300 metres and Pangong Tso, at over 4,300 metres above the sea, will take you even higher.
At these heights your body takes time to adjust, which is why any proper itinerary for Leh Ladakh usually includes at least one entire day for acclimatization in Leh itself, before starting on the high altitude journeys. This is often a rookie error, ignoring which immediately determines a required number of days for the trip.
A Realistic 7-Day Ladakh Itinerary – Day By Day
This is essentially an outline based upon the Bayard Vacations tour of “Magnificent Ladakh tour” a 7 days/ 6 nights trip revolving around Leh, Nubra valley & pangong lake.
Day 1 Leh Local Sightseeing & Relaxation At arrival Leh Airport, check into the hotel. A relaxed start in Leh (3500 meters) is important for acclimatization at altitude which we try to keep our bodies accustomed to for 2 days before they jump higher.
Visit and explore Leh Palace in morning/afternoon after you relax at the hotel for some time.
Shanti Stupa in the evening and walk through the Leh Market at night.
Day 2 Leh Local Sightseeing Monk Visit Relaxed start in Leh again, it continues to serve as our acclimatization point where we plan local sightseeing of city such as monasteries like Shey, Thiksey, monasteries located near leh, some caves… everything based in leh which helps our bodies acclimatise at height while seeing the sights of the city.
Day 3 Leh to Nubra valley via Khardung La Pass 120 km / 4-5 hours From Leh the road leads us to Nubra valley via the “Khardung pass’ - highest motorable in the world! This is where your lungs will test their capacity and it is why having the previous two days in leh before this stage helps immensely.
Day 4 Tour to Turtuk is one of the farthest Balti villages in Nubra valley and near Indo-pak border it has its own unique history and culture which makes it a distinct place to visit.
It’s very relaxing to sit down in this peaceful, beautiful and very authentic remote region of Nubra valley.
Day 5 Nubra valley to Pangong Lake (4-6 hours Shyok ) We drive into nubra valley to Pangong lake Via Shyok road which takes around 4 to 6 hours but it is scenic and filled with beautiful views of mountains & rivers you eventually reaches to the most photographed destination of Ladakh ‘ Pangong lake’. The colours change here during time and light of the day..
Day 6 Pangong to Leh Back back to Leh with memories of your beautiful trip to Nubra Valley. In the evening some free time for shopping and relaxing in Leh town itself which helps to relax your mind and body at leisure time.
Day 7 Departure Transfer to Leh Airport for your departure after finishing your memorable trip to Ladakh.
Why the pace is works
The 7-day layout is not by accident: it takes into account Ladakh's logistical constraints:
Two days in Leh ahead of the high altitude so that one doesn't succumb to altitude sickness before crossing Khardung La, the highest motorable pass.
One full day only dedicated to Turtuk, so as to not cram the Nubra Valley & Turtuk experience in one day as that would prove rushed.
One whole day was dedicated to travelling back to Leh from Pangong, so as not to have one rush to catch a flight from Leh immediately upon return. This reduces health risk, and the time required is also not fixed with weather/roads.
A smaller number of days in Ladakh is absolutely possible; however, you would have to compromise on either Leh acclimatization days or the Turtuk trip-whichever results in a higher health risk or lower level of exploration.
What do Bayard Vacations’ 7 Day Ladakh Package Include?

6 nights in hotel stays of deluxe standard, on a sharing basis, inclusive as per the tour schedule.

Assistance at Leh Airport Upon arrival.
Drivers bata, toll taxes, parking charges etc.

Best Time to Take This Itinerary
May - Sep: The primary tourist season and only when the Khardung La and other high altitude passes are reliably open and road conditions reliable for traveling to Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. Traveling at other times means a risk that road closures caused by snow will directly impact the 7-day itinerary if built with a driving day by day schedule.
Conclusion
To get the most out of Ladakh it's important to appreciate the distances and altitude and not try to fit every place into the minimum trip duration. A 6 night / 7 day trip including Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake gives the body sufficient acclimatisation and the driving trip sufficient buffer time for the mountain roads of Ladakh, without wasted additional days.
