Why Choose South Africa

The leading destination in the African continent is South Africa, which not only boasts the best safaris but also has modern cities in which the landscape and exciting activities complement each other. South Africa now attracts around 75,000 Indian tourists in 2024, with projections showing that the number will grow by 115% in 2025.

Culinary Traditions

Experience braai culture, Cape Malay cuisine, wine pairings, and South Africa's diverse food heritage.

South Africa's cuisine reflects centuries of cultural convergence—indigenous Khoisan traditions, Dutch settlers, French Huguenots, Indian indentured laborers, and British colonizers. The national treasure is braai (pronounced 'bry'), a social gathering where South Africans grill meat over open flames. More than barbecue, braai is cultural tradition uniting diverse communities. Typical braai features boerewors (spiced sausage), steaks, chicken, and pap en vleis (maize meal with meat). Cape Malay cuisine, rooted in Southeast Asian flavors, produces fragrant curries, bobotie (spiced mince with egg topping), and milk tarts. Bunny chow—a Durban innovation—consists of spiced curry filling a hollowed bread loaf, symbolizing cultural fusion. Biltong, a dried and spiced meat, remains a national snack with regional variations. Restaurants throughout the country showcase farm-to-table dining featuring local venison, line fish, and indigenous vegetables. Wine pairings complement meals, with Chenin Blanc matching curry dishes and Pinotage complementing meat. Markets overflow with fresh produce, exotic spices, and traditional ingredients. Food tours, cooking classes, and dining experiences at luxury estates create culinary memories as rich as the cuisine itself.

Quick Facts

1

Braai is so culturally significant that National Braai Day (September 24) is a public holiday celebrating South African unity through shared grilling traditions

2

Cape Malay cuisine traces to 17th-century political exiles and indentured laborers from Indonesia, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian regions who brought distinctive spice blends and cooking techniques

3

Biltong, dating to Dutch settler times, uses age-old preservation techniques combining salt curing with spice—variations include kudu (antelope), impala, and game meats unavailable elsewhere

South Africa Packages from India

South Africa is several holidays in one country: Big Five game drives, a city with a mountain in the middle of it, wine estates an hour from the coast, and a road along the Indian Ocean that takes a week to drive properly. For a first trip to Africa it is the easiest place to start, because everything works and everyone speaks English.

Two things worth knowing before you plan. Entry is now much simpler than it used to be Indian travellers can apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation, though there are conditions that decide whether it applies to you, and we explain them below. And the ICC Cricket World Cup comes to South Africa in October and November 2027, which is worth thinking about now rather than later.

South Africa trip at a glance

Field

Detail

Ideal duration

5–6 nights for Cape Town and the Winelands; 8–9 nights to add a safari; 12 nights or more for Cape Town, the Garden Route and a reserve

Cost from India

[Insert entry-level price] to ₹5,00,000 per person with Bayard, depending on duration, lodge category and how many internal flights the route needs

Best season

Depends on your focus. May–September for safari, November–March for Cape Town and the coast, August–October if you want both — see the seasonal section

Entry for Indians

Authorisation required before travel. The online ETA is now the recommended route, but it is limited to applicants aged 18+ arriving via OR Tambo, Cape Town or Lanseria, with a ZAR 500 fee. Last verified 2 September 2026

Health

Kruger is a malaria-risk area; Pilanesberg and Madikwe are malaria-free. A yellow fever certificate is required if you transit certain African hubs — see below

Getting there

One stop from Indian cities via a Gulf or African hub to Johannesburg or Cape Town, typically 12–16 hours in total

Getting around

Domestic flights between the main regions — Cape Town to a Kruger airstrip is a flight, not a drive. Budget for these; they shape both the cost and the itinerary

Entry: what Indian travellers need in 2026

South Africa is not visa-free for Indian passport holders, but the process has changed for the better. Since early 2026 Indian travellers have been able to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation biometrics captured on a phone, a decision returned quickly, and no visa centre appointment.

Who can use the ETA

• Applicants aged 18 and over. Children are due to be added in a later phase, so a family travelling with minors will need a different process for them — tell us early and we will run both.

• Travellers arriving through OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town or Lanseria. If you are flying into Durban, or crossing a land border — for example on a Victoria Falls extension — you need the standard eVisa or a consular visa instead.

• Ordinary passports, valid at least six months beyond travel.

• A processing fee of ZAR 500 applies, introduced in August 2026.

What it gives you

A stay of up to 90 days with multiple entries, linked electronically to your passport and checked automatically at immigration.

If the ETA does not apply to you

The standard eVisa or a consular visa is the alternative. Both take longer, so start earlier. We will tell you at the point of quoting which route your party needs, because with mixed-age groups it is often both.

You will also need a return ticket, confirmed accommodation and evidence of funds — all of which we provide as part of your booking.

Entry rules for South Africa changed several times during 2026 and are still being extended. Confirm current requirements before booking, and see the review cadence in Step 4.

Health: two things to sort before you travel

Malaria and why your choice of reserve matters

Kruger and the surrounding Lowveld are malaria-risk areas. The risk is low and seasonal, but prophylaxis is a conversation to have with your doctor before you travel, and it is not a decision to make at the airport.

Pilanesberg and Madikwe are malaria-free. That is the main reason they are recommended for families with young children, for pregnant travellers and for anyone who would rather not take a preventive course. You still see the Big Five. Tell us your group and we will recommend accordingly rather than defaulting to the famous name.

Yellow fever check your routing, not just your destination

South Africa requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from, or transiting for more than twelve hours through, a yellow-fever risk country. India is not one but Nairobi and Addis Ababa are, and both are common connecting hubs on the India–South Africa route.

So this depends on how you fly, not where you are going. If your itinerary routes through an African hub, you may need the certificate; a Gulf routing through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi generally does not trigger it. The vaccination is only valid ten days after the injection, so this needs checking when you book your flights rather than the week before you go. We flag it at the quoting stage.

What a South Africa trip costs

South Africa is a premium destination from India, and honestly so it is a long flight, a long trip, and a country where the good experiences are genuinely worth what they cost. There is no tourist levy and no significant hidden government charge. What drives the number is internal.

What actually moves the price

• Domestic flights. This is the big one. Cape Town to a Kruger airstrip is a two-hour flight; Johannesburg to Cape Town is another. Any circuit combining the coast with a safari needs at least one, usually two. They are unavoidable and they are a real line item.

• Lodge category. Private game reserve lodges range from comfortable to extraordinary, and the gap between them is wider than in most destinations.

• How many regions. Cape Town alone is one trip. Cape Town plus a safari is another. Adding the Garden Route means a multi-day drive on top.

• Add-ons that are really separate trips. Victoria Falls and the Rovos Rail journey are both wonderful and both change the shape and cost of the holiday substantially. Treat them as decisions, not upgrades.

• Season. Kruger peaks in the dry winter, Cape Town peaks in summer — so a trip covering both is never in low season throughout.

Beyond the package: the ETA fee, travel insurance, and tipping, which in South Africa is expected more widely and more substantially than most Indian travellers anticipate. We brief you on customary amounts before you go.

Kruger, Pilanesberg or Madikwe - choosing your safari

Most people arrive assuming the answer is Kruger. Sometimes it is. But this is the decision that most affects whether a South Africa safari suits the people actually going on it, and it is worth thirty seconds of thought.

• Kruger - the famous one, and enormous: roughly the size of a small country, with the fullest range of species and the strongest sense of genuine wilderness. It is a malaria-risk area, and it is either a long drive or a domestic flight from Johannesburg. Best for keen wildlife travellers and repeat safari-goers.

• Pilanesberg - about two and a half hours from Johannesburg, set in an ancient volcanic crater, and malaria-free. Smaller than Kruger, with correspondingly shorter drives between sightings, and you still see the Big Five. Best for a first safari, for families with young children, and for anyone short on days.

• Madikwe - the premium malaria-free option. Further from Johannesburg, much quieter than Kruger, excellent lodges and very good game viewing. Best for travellers who want exclusivity without the malaria question.

• Our steer: if you have children under twelve, or anyone in the party would rather avoid prophylaxis, go malaria-free and do not feel you are settling. If you are a serious wildlife traveller with the days and the budget, Kruger earns its reputation.

Confirm which reserves Bayard can actually deliver before publishing this section. See Defect 5 in Step 1.

Best for a first visit, and the shortest trip that is worth the flight

• Day 1: Arrive Cape Town, transfer, evening at the V&A Waterfront.

• Day 2: Cape Peninsula — Table Mountain by cable car, Cape Point, the penguins at Boulders Beach, Camps Bay.

• Day 3: Winelands — Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, with tastings and a vineyard lunch.

• Day 4: Robben Island, Bo-Kaap and the District Six Museum, or Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

• Day 5: Free day — shark cage diving, a helicopter flight, or more of the Winelands.

• Day 6: Departure.

Cape Town & Safari - 9 Days / 8 Nights

Best for first-time Africa travellers who want city and wildlife

Four nights in Cape Town for the peninsula, the mountain and the Winelands, then a domestic flight to your chosen reserve for three nights of game drives. This is the classic first South Africa trip and the shape most of our travellers choose. Which reserve depends on your group see the section above.

Cape Town, Garden Route & Safari - 12 to 13 Days

Best for travellers who want the coast as well

Adds the drive east from Cape Town through Hermanus, Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma indigenous forest, cliffs, whale watching in season and the Bloukrans bridge if anyone in the party fancies the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. Then a flight north for the safari leg.

The Grand Circuit 15 Days or More

Best for repeat visitors and for anyone doing this once, properly

Cape Town, the Garden Route, a private reserve, and Johannesburg and Pretoria for the apartheid heritage sites the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Soweto, which are among the most affecting things you can do in South Africa. Victoria Falls and the Rovos Rail journey are the two classic extensions; both are genuinely worth doing and both are substantial additions rather than upgrades.

The 2027 Cricket World Cup

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup comes to South Africa from 4 October to 21 November 2027. Fifty-four matches across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with South Africa hosting forty-four of them across eight cities: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, East London and Paarl.

If you are thinking about going, three things are worth knowing now:

• The timing is genuinely good. October and November sit in the window where safari conditions are still strong and Cape Town is warming up — so a cricket trip pairs naturally with a proper holiday rather than competing with one.

• Lodges and hotels in the host cities will fill long before tickets become the constraint. Planning ahead of the fixture announcement is worth more than reacting to it.

• If your itinerary takes you to Durban, note that it is not currently an approved ETA port of entry, so the visa route is different. This is exactly the sort of detail that catches people out.

Fixtures are expected later in 2026. Tell us you are interested and we will come back to you with a costed cricket-and-safari itinerary as soon as the schedule is published.

Best time to visit South Africa

There is no single answer, because the two halves of a classic South Africa trip peak at opposite times of year. This is the most useful thing to understand before you fix your dates.

Months

What it's like

Verdict

May–September

Dry winter in the north. Vegetation thins, animals gather at waterholes, and game viewing is at its best. Cool mornings on game drives; wet and windy in Cape Town

The safari season. Choose this if wildlife is the priority

November–March

Summer. Warm, long days on the coast — ideal for Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route and beaches. Hotter and greener in the bush, with thicker cover

The Cape season. Choose this if the coast is the priority

August–October

The overlap. Good game viewing before the rains, and Cape Town warming into spring, with whale watching around Hermanus from roughly June to November

The best compromise for a trip doing both — and the window the 2027 Cricket World Cup falls into

December–January

South African summer holidays on top of peak international demand

The busiest and most expensive. Book many months ahead

Top places to include

Cape Town

One of the most beautiful cities anywhere, and the reason most people fall for South Africa. Table Mountain by cable car or on foot; the Cape Peninsula drive to Cape Point via Chapman's Peak; African penguins at Boulders Beach; the painted houses of Bo-Kaap; Robben Island; and the V&A Waterfront. Give it four nights and you will still leave things undone.

The Winelands

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, both under an hour from Cape Town Cape Dutch architecture, mountain valleys and some of the best-value fine dining in the world. A day trip works; two days is better.

Safari country

Kruger, Pilanesberg or Madikwe depending on your group and your tolerance for malaria prophylaxis. Early morning and late afternoon game drives, and in private reserves off-road driving and night drives that the national park does not permit.

The Garden Route

The coastal road east from Cape Town: Hermanus for land-based whale watching in season, Mossel Bay, the lagoons and forests around Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma with the Bloukrans bridge. A multi-day drive rather than a day trip, and the best part of South Africa to do slowly.

Johannesburg and Pretoria

Usually the entry point, and more worth your time than most itineraries allow. The Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill are outstanding, a guided Soweto visit is genuinely moving, and the Cradle of Humankind is an hour away. Worth two nights if the history interests you.

Practical notes for Indian travellers

Is South Africa safe?

This is the question we are asked most, and it deserves a straight answer rather than either reassurance or alarm. South Africa has high crime rates, and that is real. It is also true that hundreds of thousands of tourists visit every year without incident, because tourist areas, safari lodges and the routes between them are well managed and the practical precautions are ordinary ones.

What we advise: use arranged transfers rather than walking between places at night in city centres, do not display phones, cameras or jewellery on the street, use hotel safes, and take guided tours rather than self-navigating into townships or unfamiliar areas. On a guided package with private transfers which is how we build them the practical risk is low. We will also tell you which neighbourhoods to avoid in each city, which is more useful than a general reassurance.

Money and tipping

The South African Rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere and the country is largely cashless in tourist areas; carry some cash for tips and markets. Tipping is expected more widely than in India restaurant staff, guides, drivers, petrol attendants and car guards and it adds up over a two-week trip. We give you a simple briefing with numbers.

Language and food

English is universally spoken in tourism. On food, Durban has one of the largest Indian-origin populations outside India and excellent Indian food, and Cape Town and Johannesburg have plenty too. Safari lodges cater well for vegetarians with notice tell us at booking, particularly for Jain requirements.

Getting around

Domestic flights between regions; guided transfers or self-drive within them. South Africa drives on the left and the roads are good, which makes the Garden Route genuinely enjoyable to self-drive. Distances are larger than they look plan by flight and drive time, not by map.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Assuming the ETA covers everyone in your party. Under-18s currently cannot use it, and Durban and land borders are not approved entry points.

• Booking a Nairobi or Addis routing without checking the yellow fever requirement it may trigger.

• Choosing Kruger by reputation without considering malaria, particularly with young children.

• Planning to drive Cape Town to Kruger. It is a two-hour flight or a two-day drive.

• Trying to fit Cape Town, the Garden Route and a safari into eight days.

• Underestimating tipping across a long trip.

• Leaving 2027 Cricket World Cup planning until fixtures are announced.

Why book South Africa with Bayard Vacations

• We work out which visa route each person in your party actually needs. With the ETA limited to over-18s and to three airports, mixed-age family bookings often need two processes running together — and that is exactly the kind of thing that derails a trip booked online.

• We recommend a reserve based on who is travelling, not on which name is famous including the malaria question, which matters more than most people realise.

• We check your flight routing against the yellow fever rule, which depends on where you connect rather than where you are going.

• Itineraries sequenced around real domestic flight times, so you are not losing half a day to a badly timed connection on a trip this long.

• A straight answer on safety, with specific local guidance rather than blanket reassurance.

• Early planning for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, before the fixture announcement takes the good lodges out of the market.

South Africa package FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for South Africa?

Yes, authorisation is required before travel South Africa is not visa-free. The good news is that the process is now online: Indian travellers can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) rather than visiting a visa centre, with a decision returned quickly and a stay of up to 90 days permitted.

Who can use the ETA?

Applicants aged 18 and over, on ordinary passports, arriving through OR Tambo, Cape Town or Lanseria airports. A ZAR 500 processing fee applies. If you are travelling with children, flying into Durban, or crossing a land border to Victoria Falls, you will need the standard eVisa or a consular visa instead often both routes at once for a family. Tell us your party and we will sort out which applies.

How far ahead should I apply?

Start as soon as your flights are confirmed. The ETA is quick, but if anyone in your party needs the eVisa or a consular visa instead, that takes longer and dictates your timeline.

Is South Africa safe to visit?

It has high crime rates, and that is real but hundreds of thousands of tourists visit each year without incident. On a guided package with private transfers the practical risk is low. Use arranged transport rather than walking city centres at night, keep phones and jewellery out of sight on the street, and take guided tours rather than exploring unfamiliar areas alone. We give you specific area-by-area guidance for each city on your itinerary.

Do I need malaria tablets?

It depends on where you go. Kruger and the surrounding Lowveld are malaria-risk areas and prophylaxis is a conversation for your doctor before you travel. Pilanesberg and Madikwe are malaria-free and still offer Big Five game viewing which is why we often recommend them for families with young children.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate?

It depends on your flight routing rather than your destination. South Africa requires one from travellers arriving from or transiting more than twelve hours through a yellow-fever risk country. India is not one, but Nairobi and Addis Ababa are, and both are common connecting hubs. A Gulf routing generally avoids it. The vaccination is only valid ten days after the injection, so we check this when your flights are booked.

Kruger or Pilanesberg which should I choose?

Kruger is vast, has the fullest range of wildlife and the strongest wilderness feel, but it carries malaria risk and is further from Johannesburg. Pilanesberg is about two and a half hours from Johannesburg, malaria-free, smaller and easier — and you still see the Big Five. Madikwe is the premium malaria-free option. For a first safari or a family trip, malaria-free is often the better answer and not a compromise.

How many days do I need?

Five or six nights for Cape Town and the Winelands. Eight or nine to add a safari. Twelve or more if you also want the Garden Route. Trying to do all three in eight days means spending your holiday in transit.

What is the best time to visit?

May to September for safari, when the bush thins out and animals gather at water. November to March for Cape Town, the Winelands and the coast. August to October is the best compromise if you want both which is also when the 2027 Cricket World Cup falls.

Can I drive from Cape Town to Kruger?

You can, but you should not it is a two-day drive each way. It is a two-hour domestic flight, and every sensible itinerary uses one. Domestic flights are a real and unavoidable part of a South Africa budget.

What about the 2027 Cricket World Cup?

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup runs from 4 October to 21 November 2027, with South Africa hosting 44 of the 54 matches across eight cities. The timing works well with safari and Cape Town, and lodges will fill long before tickets become the constraint. Fixtures are expected later in 2026 register your interest and we will come back with a costed itinerary as soon as they land.

How much does a South Africa trip cost from India?

It is a premium destination — a long flight, a long trip and, on any circuit combining the coast with a safari, at least one domestic flight. Lodge category and the number of regions you include drive the number more than anything else. Ask us for a fixed quote for your dates and party.

Is South Africa good for a honeymoon?

Very. Cape Town and the Winelands give you the romance and the food, a private reserve gives you something neither of you will forget, and the two combine comfortably in nine or ten nights. Whale season around Hermanus, roughly June to November, is a lovely addition.

Is it easy for vegetarians?

Easier than most people expect. Durban has one of the largest Indian-origin communities outside India and excellent Indian food, and Cape Town and Johannesburg have plenty. Safari lodges cater well with notice tell us at booking, especially for Jain requirements.

What is included in a Bayard South Africa package?

Hotels and lodges, breakfast in cities and full board on safari, domestic flights between regions where listed, game drives with professional guides, transfers, guided sightseeing and named entrance fees, and on-trip support. International airfare, visa fees, tipping, insurance and optional activities are quoted separately.
